Sustainability
Like our commitment to local charities and civic events, we think we have a role to play in keeping the environment healthy. In the way we operate our business and the programs we offer our customers, we are always looking to reduce our footprint on the environment while still delivering the products and services our customer need. One of those programs is the Corwin Recycling Program. This program incorporates all kinds of materials and, in 2009, we recycled the following amounts of these materials:
| Corrugated card board | 22.8 ton |
| Mixed Paper | 6 ton |
| Plastic Bottles | 3.6 ton |
| Clear Film | 8.4 ton |
Some other highlights include:
- Purchasing smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles, including hybrids, for merchandisers and presell
- Upgraded warehouse lighting, doubling efficiency
- Continued upgrades to "clean burning " lift trucks
- We are encouraging customers to pay their bills from their delivery invoice rather than having to print additional monthly statements for customers. This will save a lot of paper.
- We put up reminders in all offices to turn off lights at the end of the day but to leave lights on during the day as that saves electricity with fluorescent bulbs.
- Most employees live in the territories we serve.
- The majority of our products come from Olympia, Portland and Mt. Angel -- less than 100 miles from our territory.
Many of our products come from Pepsi. Corporately, PepsiCo is a leader in sustainable efforts. Some of their successes include:
- Aluminum in cans has decreased 10% a year since 1993
- Our cans are made from 50% recycled aluminum
- 2 liter bottles are 40% lighter than they were in 1980 due to significant design changes in packaging.
- A Pepsi 20oz bottle is made with 10% recycled plastic. More than any other soft drink company.
- Our plastic bottles are 100% recyclable, even the cap.
- Our manufacturing plants are using less electricity and have recycling programs in place.
